  December, 2008

JuanDiego.png-2December 12, (12:12) is time of the yearly Celebration for the Beloved Virgin of Guadalupe. She is considered the Mother of the Americas and is truly our Collective Mother as you shall see.

In 1531, Mexico had been conquered by the Conquistadores of Spain. The native Aztecs at first thought, that these white ones were Gods. They were shocked and dismayed by their actions.

The Aztecs women had long been held sacred and were protected and highly respected, even being allowed to own property and to run businesses, which was not the case for women in Spain. The rape of Mexico and its native women caused the Aztecs Virgin to move into action.

Divine Mother Mary comes forth appearing in the world when the need is great. She appears across the planet in various forms, with different names, and costumes. She expresses a particular quality or carries a particular message in each apparition.

The Virgin Of Guadalupe first appeared on a high barren hill called Tepeyac which overlooks the location of today’s’ Mexico City. The date was December 9, 1531. Guadalupe appeared to an Aztec peasant named Juan Diego. Most people considered that he was just a simple man and yet the Virgin now says he was chosen by her because he was a high initiate on a Spiritual Path. His heart was also pure and open. Mother Mary often picks children to be her messengers, but in Mexico she picked Juan.

It was winter and crystallized snow often covered the ground. As he crossed the hill to attend early mass Juan was halted by a brilliant white light and the sound of unearthly music. Before him was a lovely dark shinned lady. The Virgin of Guadalupe appeared as an Aztec princess, dressed in a lovely red gown and draped with a mantle covered with stars. Projected directly behind her were huge shafts of sunlight. She and the brilliant sun appeared in unison as shone in Later sculptures and paintings of Virgin of Guadalupe.

After the first visit with the Mother she put Juan through several important tests. She asked Juan Diego to go to the Bishop Juan de Zumarraga of the Catholic Church and to say the Lady wished to have a church erected in her honor.  This put Juan Diego at risk because the Church was still eliminating its so-called enemies. Who would believe that he had really seen Mother Mary? The Bishop demanded proof. Juan tried to avoid the Lady hurrying a different way over the hill. But lo and behold, there was the apparition of the Virgin again. Juan explained to her that his uncle was deathly sick and he had to go fetch a priest for the Last Rites.

“Juan, my Son, your uncle will not die. He will be healed.”  (This later proved to be true.) “Juan you must return up the hill and pick roses to take to the Bishop as proof of my words,” smiled the lovely Lady.

“But Virgin Mother, it is snowing today; there are no flowers here in the winter.” “

“Go Juan, today there are flowers. Go get them and bring them back to me in your tilma.”Confused, Juan hurried up the path, and sure enough, where the Virgin had first appeared to him were beautiful bushes of flowering roses. Amazed, Juan gathered the miraculous, brightly hues flowers and returned to the Lady. She carefully arranged the blossoms in Juan’s tilma and sent him back with the fragrant proof to the Bishop.

Before the Bishop Juan let the roses spill out. But instead of the roses falling down there was a perfect image of the La Virgen Morena (the Dark Virgin) emblazoned upon Juan Diego’s cloak. A small church was quickly erected as ordered by the Bishop. It is interesting to note that the new church was on the exact spot of an older Aztec temple dedicated to Tonatzin an earth goddess, mother of the Aztec gods and protectress of all beings. Strangely, this temple had been destroyed by an earlier order of Bishop Zumarraga.

The original small church was replaced by a larger one in 1709.  The Miracle of Guadalupe was recognized by the Vatican in 1745. A second sanctuary was declared a Basilica in 1904, but soon began to sink in the soft sand. A huge modern Basilica shaped like a witches hat was constructed below the hill where the tilma is displayed behind the enormous alter covered with literally thousands of fragrant flower.  Faithful ones gather daily, but the crowds swell to a million plus on 12/12 to honor this sacred miracle. Juan Diego’s priceless mantle, 477 years later, is still perfectly preserved. Visitors view the tilma from a moving ramp. Perhaps, Juan Diego and the Virgin of Guadalupe themselves, still look down upon this amazing site.  I hope so.
